The First 48 Hours After a Car Accident in Las Vegas

Most people walk away from a collision feeling shaken but basically fine. Two days later they cannot turn their head.

That pattern is well documented, and knowing about it in advance is the difference between a clean recovery and a complicated one.

Why you feel fine at the scene

A collision triggers a substantial adrenaline response, and adrenaline is an effective short term painkiller. It is still circulating while you exchange insurance information and talk to police, and it masks a great deal.

Soft tissue injuries also inflame on a delay. Muscles, ligaments, and the small joints of the neck and back respond to trauma over hours rather than seconds. Stiffness builds overnight and typically peaks on day two or three. That is why so many people decline treatment at the scene and regret it by the weekend.

What to do in the first 24 hours

Photograph everything while it is in front of you. Both vehicles, the position they came to rest in, the intersection, any visible marks on your body. Photographs taken at the scene carry far more weight than descriptions written weeks later.

Get the police report number. Write down what happened while it is fresh, including details that feel unimportant, such as whether your head hit the headrest or whether you saw the other vehicle coming.

Report the accident to your own insurer. In Nevada your policy may include medical coverage that applies regardless of who was at fault.

Then get examined. Not next week. Within a day or two.

Why early examination matters so much

There are two reasons, and both are practical.

Clinically, soft tissue injuries treated early tend to resolve more cleanly. Injured tissue heals with scar tissue, and scar tissue that forms without treatment is less elastic than what it replaced. Addressing it while it is still organizing is how you avoid the stiffness and recurring pain that follow people for years.

Practically, a gap between the collision and your first examination is the most common thing used to challenge an injury claim. If you were hurt on Friday and first seen three weeks later, the argument against you writes itself. An examination within a day or two, properly documented, removes it.
